Movement of Voluntary Field Liberators

Today, at the same time as the conference on European GMO free regions at the EU parliament building, a workshop by the Faucheurs Volontairs (Voluntary Field Liberators) took place outside, on the Place du Luxembourg, under the watchful eye of the police.

Some sixty people participated, among whom representatives of Voluntary Reapers from different countries, as wel as the Mnister of the Environment for the Brussels region, Evelyne Huytenbroek, who took part in the theoretical and practical training in 'liberating fields' from Genetically Modified crops.

This Thursday September 16th at 11h30, corn was planted in the green on the Place du Luxembourg to be harvested by activists wearing protective clothing. Before the practical instructions, field liberators from France, Portugal, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium Holland and Wales explicitly expressed the importance of taking direct non-violent action against the invasion of GM crops in Europe.

In fact, the goal of the workshop was to encourage direct action against GM crops in Europe and to share techniques specially adapted to clear fields of GM crops. In spite of strong public resistance against GM food, the EU is actually opening the door to GM crops, giving in to pressure from big biotech multinationals like Monsanto.

A field manual was distributed amongst the participants and passers-by hich also served to stimulate people to start new field liberation affinity groups. The manual revealed the location of fields with GM crops in Belgium. Todays' action corresponds with the Greenpeace statement yesterday, exposing the contamination of a conventional corn crop close to Ghent with genes from a nearby GM corn (Mon 810) field experiment, which is authorised and conducted by the regional Flemish authority.

Todays' workshop finished with Minister Huytenbroek handling the scythe to chop down the GMO corn (pictures). Finally even the police took part in the exercise, although they had previously surrounded the activists and asked for their ID.

Unlike what the industry would like politicians to believe, GM crops do not reduce world hunger and don't help in dealing with climate change. On the contrary, GMO's are at the heart of an agro-industrial system that destroys the livelihood of millions of people and increases use of pesticides, depletion of soils, water pollution and loss of biodiversity.

The biotechnology industry aims to dominate the entire food chain. Also in Europe, no independent scientific research of the safety of GM food is being conducted. Meanwhile GM crops in the fields are contaminating non-GMO and organic crops.

Eerste Belgische workshop “Veldbevrijding” van Europese anti-gentechactivisten groot succes

(Brussel – 16 september 2010) Vandaag vond voor het eerst in Belgie, een openbare workshop van de Beweging van Vrijwillige Veldbevrijders plaats voor het Europese Parlement, gelijktijdig met de Conferentie van Gentechvrije Regio's gaande in het parlementsgebouw.
Onder het toeziend oog van de politie wisselden 60 internationale deelnemers, theorie en praktijkervaring uit over het onschadelijk maken van genetisch gemanipuleerde (gg- of gentech) mais. Ook de Milieuminister van het Brusselse Gewest, Evelyne Huytenbroeck, participeerde in de workshop.

Ten behoeve van de workshop werden om 11.30u enkele rijen maisplanten geplaatst op het grasveld in het midden van het Luxemburgplein. Instructeurs in veiligheidskleding konden zo enkele verwijderingstechnieken demonstreren. Voordat men kon deelnemen aan de praktijkoefening, benadrukten ervaren Veldbevrijders uit Frankrijk, Wales, Duitsland, Portugal, en Spanje, het belang van geweldloze, directe actie tegen de invasie van gentechgewassen in Europa.

Het doel van de workshop was om directe actie tegen GGO's in Europa aan te moedigen en technieken te delen voor het effectief onschadelijk maken van een gentechveld. Ondanks grote publieke weerstand staat de EU op het punt de deuren te openen voor grootschalige gentechteelt, daarmee toegevend aan de druk van biotech-multinationals als Monsanto. In Belgie is met name de Vlaamse overheid die schaamteloos de gentechindustrie omarmt.

Workshopdeelnemers ontvingen een handleiding om hen op weg te helpen zelf een aktiegroep te vormen. Ook voorbijgangers kregen een foldertje. De handleiding vermeldt onder andere de lokaties van gentechgewassen in Belgie. De veldbevrijdingsworkshop lijkt wel een logisch antwoord te geven op het nieuwsbericht van Greenpeace gisteren dat het gentechmaisveld in Wetteren naburige gangbare mais heeft besmet. Dat ggo-veld is een experiment in opdracht van de Vlaamse overheid.

De workshop van vandaag sloot af met het omzeisen van de mais door Minister Huytenbroek (zie foto). Uiteindelijk deed ook de politie mee en hakte de laatste “gentech”-maisplanten om, na eerder de activisten omringd en om identificatie gevraagd te hebben.

In tegenstelling tot wat de gentechindustrie de politici probeert wijs te maken, helpen GGO's niet de honger uit de wereld en zijn ze ook geen oplossing voor klimaatverandering. In tegendeel, GGO's zijn een cruciaal onderdeel van een industrieel landbouwsysteem dat het levensonderhoud van miljoenen mensen vernietigt en zorgt voor een toename van gifgebruik, bodemuitputting, watervervuiling en verlies van biodiversiteit.

De biotech-industrie wil de complete voedselketen domineren. Ook in Europa wordt nauwelijks onafhankelijk onderzoek gedaan naar de veiligheid van de GGO's in ons voedsel en op onze akkers. Ondertussen besmetten gentech-import en –teelt de gentechvrije landbouw en biologische keten.

Mouvement des faucheurs volontaires
Alors qu’au Parlement européen se tenait une conférence sur les « Régions libre d’OGM », un atelier de « faucheurs volontaires » s’est déroulé, place du Luxembourg, sous l’œil attentif de la police.
Une soixantaine de participants, des représentants du mouvement des faucheurs volontaires de plusieurs pays et…la Ministre bruxelloise chargée de l’environnement, Evelyne Huytebroek, ont participé à un atelier théorique et pratique sur le « fauchage volontaire » de cultures Génétiquement Modifiée.
Ce jeudi 16 septembre à 11h30, des maïs ont été planté Place du Luxembourg pour ensuite être fauchés par des activistes vêtus de tenues de protection. Avant la formation pratique, plusieurs représentants internationaux de mouvement de faucheurs volontaires venant du Portugal, d’Espagne, du Pays de Galle, d’Allemagne et de France se sont exprimés et ont insisté sur l’importance de recourir à l’action directe non-violente pour faire face à l’invasion des cultures OGM en Europe.
En effet, le but de cet atelier était d’encourager l’action directe contre les OGM en Europe au travers du partage de techniques adaptées au nettoyage de champ de cultures OGM. Malgré une forte résistance citoyenne, l’UE ouvre actuellement la porte aux cultures OGM, cédant ainsi aux pressions des multinationales des biotechnologies.
Des « Guides d’action » ont été distribués aux nombreux passants qui se sont joints à l’atelier afin qu’ils puissent former des groupes affinitaires de « faucheurs volontaires ». L’emplacement exact des cultures OGM présentes en Belgique a également été révélé. Cette action fait d’ailleurs suite aux révélations de Greenpeace hier. L’organisation a, en effet, révélé des faits de contamination des champs conventionnels à Wetteren par un champ « expérimental » de cultures génétiquement modifiées, récemment autorisée par le gouvernement régional flamand.
L’atelier s’est terminé en présence de la Ministre du Gouvernement de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, chargée de l'Environnement, qui s’est elle-même initiée au fauchage d’OGM (Voir Photos).
Des policiers se sont aussi prêté à l’exercice alors qu’ils avaient commencé par faire pression sur les activistes en les encerclant et en relevant les identités des personnes présentes.
Contrairement à ce que l’industrie voudrait faire croire aux politiciens, les cultures génétiquement modifiées ne réduisent pas la faim dans le monde et n’aident en rien la lutte contre le changement climatique. Au contraire, les OGM sont au cœur d’un système agroindustriel qui détruit des les moyens de subsistance de millions de personnes et augmentent le recours aux pesticides, la destruction des sols, l’épuisement des eaux et la destruction de la biodiversité.
L’industrie des biotechnologies cherche à dominer l’entièreté de la chaine alimentaire. Même en Europe, il n’existe pas d’étude scientifique indépendante sur la sécurité de ces cultures alimentaires. Ces cultures menacent de contaminer les champs de cultures non-OGM et la production bio.
